His absurdity is treated as cool and the player agrees. The Boss is over the Top and Saints Row rides that aspect to the bank. But he’s kept relatively grounded as well making the player more in tune with him. Tommy hardly has more to him than his violence and goal of taking over.

Both characters are also caricatures but that’s made the primary focus. But the latter can make the caricature parts self defeating at times and I suspect this is one of the reasons some people don’t like Trevor.Ĭompare him to characters like the Boss from Saints Row 3-4 and Tommy from Vice City. Who loves Patricia and treats her with sincerity, and most importantly, takes orders from people he hates. But it sometimes alternates between player Trevor and story Trevor who’s loyal to a fault, who’s vulnerable about being lonely and treats Micheal as his only true friend. Trevor is introduced to us as “the personification of the average GTA player” as a hyper competent, unstoppable killing machine that’s an absolute monster with no morals or limits. It’s torn between trying to make Trevor this caricature and a genuine character who exists beyond the player’s control. Even the though the whole idea in making the player play as Abby so you can understand her perspective and hopefully want to forgive her, many players only felt more frustrated playing as her. Or the inconsistencies in his character make him less likeable. Some players may not want an over the top personality and prefer the more grounded other cast. The game made him the star the player must use at times. I don’t think people who dislike him chose to play as Trevor. (Except for Michael for the first half of the game, who was trying to get rid of Trevor, which in some ways makes him worse than Trevor, and just as bad of a monster, just in different respects.) But if you were to role play as the characters, the main characters would definitely not kill each other, unless they absolutely had no choice. At the end of the day the game is filled with flawed individuals and everyone‘a an asshole is what the game conveys, who all deserve to die, or all deserve to live out their angry miserable lives until they died one way or another. There are more things to talk about, but this is what was on the top of my head. I think the game started off painting Trevor as a monster, and then spent a majority of the rest of the game humanizing him, with him mentioning his fucked up childhood, meeting Michael, fighting his urges when he tried to fight Franklin, his love story line with Patricia, etc, and making Michael out to be a similar monster, just with more betrayal and more hypocritical, instead of being as self aware of all the bad that he does.Īlso, role playing as Franklin, they also made it clear that Franklin had no issues with Trevor, and both Lamar and Franklin liked him, or at least respected to some extent.
